The player who defends the goal. The only player permitted to handle the ball with their hands, but only within their own penalty area.

Central defensive player whose primary role is to prevent the opposition from scoring.

A defensive player positioned on either flank. Modern full-backs are often expected to support attacks as well.

A hybrid role combining full-back defending with wide midfielder attacking. Common in three-centre-back formations.

A midfielder who sits in front of the defence, breaking up opposition attacks and recycling possession.

An all-purpose midfielder who links the defence to the attack and contributes to both phases of play.

A midfielder positioned just behind the strikers, responsible for creating goal-scoring chances.

An attacking player who operates on the flanks, delivering crosses or cutting inside to shoot.

The primary goal-scoring forward, positioned at the tip of the attack. Also called a centre-forward.

A forward who plays just behind the main striker, combining goal-scoring and creative responsibilities.

A player is offside if they are in the opponent's half, closer to the goal line than both the ball and the second-to-last defender when the ball is played to them. Offside itself is not a foul — only attempting to gain an advantage from the position is penalised.

Three goals scored by one player in a single match.

A game in which the goalkeeper and their team concede no goals.

Two goals scored by one player in a single match.

When a player passes the ball through an opponent's legs. Considered one of the most humiliating skills in football.

Striking the ball with the forehead or top of the head.

Striking the ball before it touches the ground.

An overhead kick where the player jumps, leans back, and strikes the ball backwards over their own head.

Moving the ball past an opponent while retaining control, using changes of speed and direction.

The final pass or action that directly leads to a goal being scored.

Awarded to the attacking team when the ball crosses the goal line last touched by a defender. Taken from the corner arc.

A restart after a foul from which a goal can be scored directly without the ball touching another player.

A restart after a foul from which the ball must touch another player before a goal can be scored.

A direct free kick taken from the penalty spot (11 metres / 12 yards from goal), awarded when a foul is committed inside the penalty area.

How play restarts when the ball crosses the touchline. The ball must be thrown with both hands from behind the head.

Awarded to the defending team when the attacking team last touches the ball over the goal line. Taken from anywhere inside the 6-yard box.

A tiebreaker procedure used in knockout competitions when teams are level after extra time. Each team takes 5 penalties alternately; if still level, it continues sudden death.

The positional structure of a team, described numerically from defence to attack (e.g. 4-3-3 = four defenders, three midfielders, three forwards).

Aggressively moving towards the ball-carrier when out of possession to win the ball back quickly and high up the pitch.

A pressing approach applied in the opponent's half, aiming to win possession close to their goal and create immediate scoring chances.

Quickly transitioning from defence to attack the moment possession is won, exploiting the space behind an opponent's advanced defensive line.

A defensive tactic where defenders step forward in a coordinated line to catch opposition attackers offside.

A possession-based style characterised by short, quick passes and maintaining the ball to control the game. Associated with Spain and FC Barcelona circa 2008–2012.

Immediately pressing to win the ball back after losing it, rather than retreating to a defensive shape. Associated with Jürgen Klopp's teams.

A striker who drops deep into midfield to collect the ball, disrupting the opposition's defensive structure and creating space for teammates.

A metric (0–1) measuring the probability that a shot results in a goal, based on historical data including shot location, angle, and type. xG > 1 means a team created high-quality chances.

The probability that a pass will lead to a goal, based on the quality of the shot it creates.

Passes Allowed Per Defensive Action — measures pressing intensity. A lower number means a team presses more aggressively.

Passes that move the ball at least 10 metres closer to the opponent's goal, indicating forward intent.

The number of times a player touches the ball inside the opponent's penalty area — a measure of attacking presence.

A pass that directly leads to a shot on goal (whether or not a goal is scored).

The percentage of shots that result in goals. Measures a striker's clinical finishing.

Video Assistant Referee — a technology system where match officials review footage of specific incidents: goals, penalty decisions, direct red cards, and mistaken identity.

A caution shown to a player for a bookable offence. Two yellow cards in one match result in a red card and ejection.

Immediate ejection from the game. The player's team continues with ten players. A player can receive a red card directly or after two yellows.

When a referee waves play on after a foul because stopping play would disadvantage the team that was fouled. The foul is still noted.

Additional time added at the end of each half to compensate for stoppages (injuries, substitutions, goal celebrations, VAR reviews).

Two additional 15-minute periods played when knockout matches are level after 90 minutes. If still level, a penalty shootout follows.
