Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert numbers to Roman numerals?

Type an Arabic number and the tool shows its Roman numeral form instantly, and vice versa. It supports values from 1 to 3999, the standard range of classical Roman numerals.

What are the basic Roman numeral symbols?

I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1000. Larger numbers combine these symbols, generally from highest to lowest value.

How does subtractive notation work?

When a smaller symbol precedes a larger one it is subtracted, so IV is 4 (5 minus 1) and IX is 9 (10 minus 1). This avoids repeating a symbol four times.

Why is there no Roman numeral for zero or numbers above 3999?

The Roman system had no symbol for zero, and standard numerals only go up to 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). Larger values historically used bars over numerals, which this tool does not require.
